Clif Bar Inc. Type Private Founded 1990 Headquarters Berkeley, California, United States Key people Gary Erickson, Kit Crawford Products energy bars Website http://www.clifbar.com/ Clif Bar (stylized as CLIF) is a company that produces energy bars and other food targeted at people with active lifestyles. Their flagship History Gary Erickson is the founder and CEO of Clif Bar. He graduated from the Orfalea College of Business with a degree in business administration in 1980. In 1986, Erickson co-founded Kali’s Bakery in Emeryville, California which sold calzones and gourmet cookies. While on a 175 mile bike ride he was eating energy bars and decided he could no longer take another bite due to the taste. He developed Clif Bar as an alternative to the many poor tasting energy bars on the market. In 1992, Kali’s introduced the first Clif Bars in the bakery. In 1997, Kali's Bakery changed its name to Clif Bar Inc., naming it after Gary's father, Clifford, with whom he often took hikes. In March 1999, Clif Bar introduced Luna Bars specifically marketed towards women. Luna bars outpaced the sales of Clif Bars and quickly became the company's top product. Later in 1999, Inc. Magazine selected the company as one of the twenty best small businesses web sites in the country. In 2000, Inc. Magazine Clif Bar recalled on Jan 19, 2009, many products which may contain salmonella-tainted peanut butter. The press release ( http://www.clifbar.com/recall/US-Peanut-Voluntary-Recall-Release-US-0Canada.pdf ) notes: "Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to destroy them but retain the “Best By/Sell By” code found on the back of the package. Consumers with questions or who would like a refund may contact Clif Bar & Company at 1-510-558-7855." Yet consumers would of necessity be forced to open the package to destroy the potentially tainted Clif Bar and at the same time retain the packaging, thus handling the potentially tainted product.
